What is our response to the humanitarian crisis here in Venezuela?
To do more of what we do.
We started in 1996 as an organization providing family planning and literacy education for marginalized rural populations. Over the years, we have expanded to provide a broader range of urban and humanitarian aid in a country that has taken a significant turn for the worse. Our impact has been substantive. Why? Because in crisis or not, we have never lost sight of our focusFAMILY PLANNING and EDUCATION are two proven tools for lifting families and communities out of poverty and brightening their futures.
Reproductive Health and Urgent Medical Care
We are scaling up in this challenging but growthful time for us. Our Foundation has never been more important in the lives of the Venezuelans we serve. The good news is that the surviving private health sector is collaborating closely with on-the-ground NGOs like ourselves to serve an increasingly destitute population and to better support each other. We have added to our dedicated team of private and public sector doctors, opened a surgery consultation in one clinic here, and moved our medical administrative office to another clinic at their generous invitation. We now work in three clinics in the city of Cumana with three surgery theaters delivering up to 200 surgical interventions a month. Our network of family planning promoters offer reproductive health services to hundreds of low-income families in three rural counties and beyond.
You will be directly helping both low-income families and the struggling health care providers and institutions who serve them.
Venezuela's future depends on preserving its established institutions and by giving its skilled professionals a way to remain in the country and not join the massive wave of emigration that has occured in the face of this ongoing crisis, currently recognized as the second largest outflow (after Syria) of human beings on the planet.

For a take on the public health situation here,
please read
Nicholas Kristof's column today in the New York Times.
He gives a good sense of what people are up against down here.
Rural Education and Literacy
We continue to support several rural public schools and literacy programs; provide scholarships for rural high school and college students; subsidize school supplies; offer free Internet and computer access; and assist FUNDAPSIED, an institution serving autistic children in Cumana. With our medical offices now in the clinics, Casa ServYr, our original headquarters, is administering our education, rural development and humanitarian aid programs. In Merida, on the other side of the country, we support Gisela  Sarrazin in her work teaching independent living skills to at-risk rural youth.
This recent New York Times article also gives an accurate take
on the state of public education here.
